What Are Patterns in Western Riding?
In Western riding, patterns are a set sequence of movements or maneuvers that horse and rider perform together, usually within an arena. Patterns are designed to demonstrate the horse’s training, responsiveness, and the rider’s control and skill.
These movements often include things like:
Walking, trotting, or loping specific circles or figures
Performing lead changes
Doing stops, spins, or rollbacks
Navigating around cones or poles
Backing up straight or around turns
Each pattern is like a “routine” or “test” that riders memorize and perform to a judge, who scores based on accuracy, smoothness, and overall performance.
Patterns are a core part of many Western disciplines like Horsemanship, Trail, and Reining, and they help showcase the partnership between horse and rider.

Please also show a stop and back at least 5 steps at some point during your recording.
Hunter Under Saddle: Please record from the center of the arena. Use as high quality of recording as possible to be sure the judge has the best possible view of your run. Record yourself showing 15-30 seconds of each gait each direction: Walk, Rising Trot, and Canter (or Walk and Rising Trot for Walk/Trot classes). Please also show a stop and back at least 5 steps at some point during your recording.
Ranch Rail Pleasure: Please record from the center of the arena. Use as high quality of recording as possible to be sure the judge has the best possible view of your run. Video Upload Guidelines
All videos must be sent to stockhorseireland@gmail.com by the closing date advertised.
Please be sure to purchase your desired classes. Entries without payment cannot be judged.
In your email, please include your name and horse's name along with the class you are showing and a link to the video/s.
Video link may be a public YouTube video, unlisted YouTube link, or iCloud link.
Please upload in as high of a quality as possible and be sure horse and rider are well visible. Remember, poor video quality may affect your judge's ability to see your ride and may affect your ability to be scored.
All pattern classes must be recorded from the position designated on the pattern, but the camera may rotate and zoom to best display the horse and rider.
